Fix for MacOS/X which uses STUPID BROKEN UNICODE COMPOSE CHARACTERS !
(rant off :-). Inspired by work from Benjamin Riefenstahl <Benjamin.Riefenstahl@epost.de>.
Also add MacOSX/Darwin configure fixes.
Jerry - can we put this in 3.0 release ? :-).
