return results on prs_xxxxx() and all xxx_io_xxx() routines.
the whole task is not complete, yet. xxx_io_xxx() routines that
_call_ xxx_io_xxx() routines not done.
prs_xxxx() covered by macros. considering doing xxx_io_xxxx in the same way.
