Subject: mark the HEAD branch as deprecated. Nothing that a determined
 programmer can't work around, but hopefully enough that people will notice
 that they should be using the 3.0 branch at the moment (This used to be
 commit d6de8e8a94c8fb7d7837ed2b43092a275cc9d6c5)
